Rate adjustment

On 31-Dec-08, my rates will go up to correspond with the EFA rates. My hourly rate will be $25 per hour.

Anyone contracted with me at present will remain at my current rate of $20 per hour. Haggling is fine if meant in earnest and not to reenact Monty Python scripts.

Projects remain negotiable, however.

Steve Buchheit just got his first contract!

I invited Steve as a panelist to Conclave, so I am especially pleased. And I know his editor too.

I just wrapped up NYRSF. Sometime later, in a month or so, I'll have more news. Possibly something from NYRSF...

Shimmer is coming in. Think I get ten stories this time. :D

No more cons until ConFusion -- where, I am happy to say, I have absolutely nothing I have to run, chase, recruit, or what-have-you. Peaceful.

Freon will be the Fan GoH at Fusion.

Electric Velocipede proofreading

I just wrapped up part of Electric Velocipede 15/16.

This was my first issue, and it's a double issue. I was assigned a quarter, but since some selections were still in editing, I elected to make up for that by starting sooner in the issue.

Wow. Some really lovely stories in EV. When I get back from Clave, I mean to read the earlier half, since I had other projects this week (sf novel, workshop, con arrangements).

New book job in: sf novel

Really delighted, as I've been anticipating this one.

Also, I'll be at ConClave 33 for the writing workshop next month... during 3-5 October.

As will many of the writers I know: Rick Moore, Jim Hines, Lucy Snyder -- plus Steve Buchheit, Merrie Haskell, Dave Klecha, and Gary Braunbeck -- and of course M. Keaton, M. Andaluz, Daniel Hogan, William Jones, and Steve Climer.

At Clave, I would really love to discuss Robert Asprin's contributions to f/sf. We have shared-world anthologies because of Robert Asprin and Lynn Abbey. I wish we had met. The Dorsai will mourn him for us, and I need to go mourn with them.

Updates to industry links

I'll keep the P&E (Preditors & Editors) section updated.

The Black Hole, for example, tracks paying markets. I added the Absolute Write watercooler too. These are forum-sites that you want to use for your own sake. Trust me.

Whenever you submit, make sure you've looked at the market. Check Ralan, check Absolute Write, check HiPiers, etc. Ask around. Look at your favorite author blogs. Research!

Because you don't want your work to fall into a black hole.

NYRSF

Last month I began helping out at The New York Review of Science Fiction.

Very cool. I never know what will come in, and it's very different from anything else I've worked on.

September (#241) is the retro issue, with Doc Savage and James Blish essays on the front page. August (#240) reviewed Lovecraft-inspired art, and featured various essays, one remembering Roger Zelazny, and another on Greye La Spina [a lady I had never heard of].

The New York Review of Science Fiction is a semiprozine which just reached its twenty-first year, and has twenty Hugo nominations; published monthly.

Their Dragon Press store opened this year.


This is a really good summer.
